How to Add Banners to Login Screens

Version: 5.x
Deployment: All deployments

This document describes how to create and customize banners to login screens into the AlienVault USM Appliance Servers.

SSH Banner

To show a banner each time someone tries to connect through ssh to USM Appliance , you need to modify the ssh configuration file by following the steps below:

  1. Edit the ssh config file: /etc/ssh/sshd_config
  2. Add the configuration needed to load a banner from a given file, for example: Banner /etc/ssh_banner

    Banner_config file in AlienVault USM

  3. Set the text needed to be showed as ssh banner, for example:

Modifying the ssh config file in AlienVault USM

  4. Restart ssh service:

USM:/# /etc/init.d/ssh restart

[ ok ] Restarting OpenBSD Secure Shell server: sshd.

Console Banner

If you need to configure a banner to show when an user is logging in through the console (physical or VMWare), you need to modify the /etc/issue file. By default /etc/issue contains a message showing the USM Appliance version, but you can customize:

Main banner for AlienVault USM console

Web Interface Banner

And for the web interface, you need to modify the /usr/share/ossim/www/session/login.php file in order to show a custom banner or text in your USM Appliance web UI login.

Note: Custom files would be overwritten in the updates; check your custom files after each update to verify that they were not modified.
