Is it possible to get file integrity checking to raise an alarm?

Entry Level
I have the HIDS agent intstalled on a server and I change one of the default monitored files such as /etc/hosts. If I go to the agent tab and click the modified files icon on the agent (to force a scan), it shows the file has indeed been modified. But this is pretty much the only way I know a file has been modified - should an alarm or event be generated automatically or do I need to configure this? If so where?
Sorry for the vague question but not able to find a lot of documentation on file integrity checking.
