NERC CIP compliance requires the ability to identify and organize bulk electric systems (BES) assets, apply security monitoring rules by risk level, capture cyber threats and malicious actions, and notify security operations staff when necessary. NERC CIP Version 5 was released on November 22, 2013. It categorizes systems based on their impact to BES cyber assets, helping organizations identify risks to their infrastructure and prioritize mitigating efforts. High and medium-impact BES cyber systems must adhere to NERC CIP V5 by April 1, 2016, while low-impact BES cyber systems can wait until April 1, 2017.
