AlienVault Launches Open Threat Exchange, Largest Community-Sourced Information Security Threat Feed

Campbell, Calif. – February 22, 2012 – AlienVault, creator of OSSIM, the de facto standard open source SIEM (Security Information and Event Management), announced today the launch of the AlienVault Open Threat Exchange™ (AV-OTX), a system for sharing threat intelligence among OSSIM users and AlienVault customers. Free to contributors, AV-OTX cleanses, aggregates, validates and publishes threat data streaming in from the broadest range of security devices across a community of more than 18,000 OSSIM and AlienVault deployments. With AV-OTX, an attack on any member of the community alerts and arms the entire community with timely intelligence required to better manage a similar attack.

“The OSSIM community is spread among many industries and countries, and is composed of organizations of all sizes, making it the most diverse and comprehensive threat feed possible,” said AlienVault CTO Roger Thornton. “Other threat intelligence services are often based on data from a single type of security device, are available to only a select set of users, or require a subscription. Our Open Threat Exchange delivers on our mission of harnessing collective intelligence for the common good by providing the broadest scope of threat intelligence data, sourced from the largest community of SIEM deployments, freely to anyone who contributes.”

Built into OSSIM and the OSSIM-powered AlienVault Unified Security Management Platform™, AV-OTX automatically cleanses and collects threat data from a broad variety of security devices including firewalls, proxy servers, web servers, anti-virus systems, intrusion detection and prevention systems, among others, and feeds the latest threat intelligence back into participating OSSIM deployments. The AlienVault Research Lab reviews and validates all threat data to ensure that only the most accurate and actionable intelligence is published.

“Internet threats are global by nature and they need to be countered from an equally global perspective. Global reach to information from customers, companies and countries worldwide such as that achieved by the Telefonica-Alienvault partnership for MSSP services can be a powerful enabler for that effective global vision,” said Jose Luis Gilperez, Director of Product Development & Security Innovation, Telefonica Digital. “With the AlienVault Open Threat Exchange™, an attack on any part of our network or on any member of the AV-OTX community alerts everyone in the community and helps us all respond to threats far more effectively.”

AV-OTX is free to any OSSIM user or AlienVault customer who chooses to participate. To join, download the latest version of OSSIM and opt-in to AV-OTX™.
