A distributed denial of service attack can take a number of forms, including: volumetric attacks that flood a network with data; protocol attacks, which look to exhaust resources of a server or those of its networking systems like firewalls, routing engines, or load balancers; and an application layer attack, where the server generates the response to an incoming, fraudulent client request. Whatever type of attack is used, the goal is to flood a server with traffic. Eventually, the server is overwhelmed, causing it to either go down, or become unresponsive, even to legitimate requests. The end goal may be to extort money from the attack victim, to distract the victim from a more damaging ‘back door’ attack, or to protest something that involves the victim.
